PRESS RELEASE – Three Days with Mary: in October in Italy the national pilgrimage of the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal will begin anew.

The national pilgrimage of the statue of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal that began on November 11, 2020 (Vatican City) with the blessing of Pope Francis will begin anew. This initiative began as a manner to commemorate the 190thanniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother to Saint Catherine Laboure and is sponsored by the Missionaries of the Congregation of the Mission in Italy with the collaboration of the wider Vincentian Family.

In each center that is visited, there will be “three days with Mary” because, as Father Vaslerio Di Trapani, superior of the provincial house of the Congregation of the Mission and of the Leonine College in Rome, stated:  during this pastoral year the Lord has made us see the ever more-urgent need to reach out to others, to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God so that people might discover Mary as a woman who lived her life with integrity, as a woman who was happy and fully realized as a human person. Therefore, we are attempting to reach out to the ecclesial communities that desire to embrace the proposal of the Vincentian Missionaries in order to encourage and animate the parish community providing them with catechetical instruction, prayer, the sacrament of Reconciliation, visits to vulnerable and infirm individuals, meetings with children and adolescents.

Despite the many difficulties (including logistical problems that resulted from COVID-19), more than 200 parishes have already been visited and received the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. People have given witness to the fact that this pilgrimage has been a time of spiritual grace and growth.

The pilgrimage will resume but take on a broader perspective: looking toward November 27, 2030 when we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the encounter between the Blessed Mother and Saint Catherine Laboure. Catherine was a young Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul to whom the Blessed Mother appeared. Mary spoke to Catherine during a lengthy encounter and stated: These are very sad times. Misfortunes afflict France. The entire world will be engulfed in sadness. But if people come to the foot of this altar, there graces will be spread over all those who ask for them with confidence and fervor … I have always been watchful over you. Again, on November 27, 1839, Catherine saw the Blessed Mother. This time the Virgin held in her hand a globe (representing all of humankind). Catherine was awed by the Virgin’s beauty and was entrusted with a mission to have a medal made and was promised: everyone who wears it around their neck will receive great graces.

Father Valerio explains: During this time of pilgrimage moving toward 2030, each year we will focus on a theme that will be developed during the three days. This year, remembering the “Light” of Saint Louise de Marillac, we want to highlight to protagonism of the Holy Spirit. Four hundred years ago, on June 4, 1623, Saint Louise was enlightened by the Holy Spirit who helped her dispel all her doubts. At that time, Louise came to the understanding that she would pronounce vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in a small community dedicated to the service of the poor and would be involved in a continual movement of coming and going. The Holy Spirit was a protagonist in the vocational choice of Louise de Marillac just as he was a protagonist in the vocational choice of the Blessed Mother.

Father Valerio continued: At the conclusion of each stop on the pilgrimage, we will provide the parishioners with some reflection pamphlets on the theme of the year. Thus, the acceptance of the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal will not be an isolated event, but rather an event that will continue to draw the community together to pray, reflect and share their thoughts on the proposed themes.

Those interested in promoting this time brief time of pastoral animation with two Vincentian Missionaries and the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal should contact Father Valerio Di Trapani at padrevaleriocm@gmail.com so that this experience of pastoral animation can be organized.

On the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal which will be celebrated on November 27th, the Vincentian Family will gather together for an audience with Pope Francis. This will mark both the culmination and the continuation of a journey that began on November 11, 2020, when Pope Francis blessed the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in the Vatican. The pilgrimage of this image began on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of the apparitions to Saint Catherine Laboure. This initiative was promoted by the Congregation of the Mission in Italy in collaboration with the worldwide Vincentian Family.

On the night of July 18-19, 1830, the Blessed Mother appeared for the first time to Catherine Labouré, a young Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. This was a rather lengthy encounter in which the Blessed Mother stated: The times are very evil. Misfortunes afflict France and the entire world will experience misfortunes of every sort … But come to the foot of this altar, there abundant graces will be spread over all those who ask for them with confidence and fervor. They will be given to the great and the small. Then once again, on November 27th, 1830, the Blessed Mother appeared again to Catherine Labouré, holding in her hands a small globe (representing humankind). Catherine contemplated her beauty and accepted the mission to make a medal: the persons who wear this medal will receive great graces

The members of the worldwide Vincentian Family, faithful to the Word of God, inspired by the charism which calls them to serve God in the person of the poor and encouraged by this initiative of the Blessed Mother to go on pilgrimage, want to remind us that the Blessed Mother continues to invite men and women to approach the foot of the altar.

The meeting with Pope Francis will take place in Paul VI Hall, on Wednesday, November 24thThousands of people will accompany the image of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, members of the various branches of the Vincentian Family: the International Association of Charity, Vincentian Marian Youth, parishes, school groups, and members of the various parishes that received the image during the pilgrimage. For the members of the Vincentian Family, this meeting with Pope Francis will be a special time of grace. The members of the Congregation of the Mission, together with the members of the different branches of the Vincentian Family, will undertake a mission of evangelizing and animating the Christian communities in Italy … a program referred to as Three Days with Mary … Animating the Christian Communities. This program is directed to the parishes and is composed of listening to the parish members, celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, an encounter with the poor and the helpless, a time for lectio divina and prayer. During those three days, three elements of the Christian life will be developed, namely, called, live, sent forth. The initiative will begin in a parish in Rome and another in Palestrina.

The meeting with the Pope will be preceded with a Marian Vocational Vigil which will take place on November 23 at 20:45 (Rome Time) in the Basilica of Saint Andrea della Valle. Like Mary, all are called to respond with the “yes” of Mary. This gathering will journey along the path of the Virgin, the acceptance of her call and will include reflections on the apparitions of the Virgin to Catherine Laboure. This Vigil will be led by Father Luigi María Espicoco, Ecclesiastical Assistant at the Dicastery for Communication and the music will be provided by the Choir from the Diocese of Rome.

The following day, at the conclusion of the Audience with the Holy Father, the Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission, Father Toma Mavriĉ, CM, will celebrate the Eucharist at altar in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter at 12:30 hours.

PRESS RELEASE – Pilgrimage with Mary On the 190th Anniversary of the Apparitions of the Blessed Mother to Saint Catherine Labouré

On Wednesday, November 11th, the Holy Father will bless the sacred image of the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in the Vatican in the presence of the Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission, Father Tomaẑ Mavriĉ, CM and a small delegation of persons responsible for organizing Mary’s pilgrimage to the various communities throughout Italy on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of the apparitions to Saint Catherine Labouré.

In the midst of the difficult situation in which the world finds itself as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the midst of a society marked by conflict and tension on every continent, the spiritual children of Saint Vincent de Paul begin, with this Marian pilgrimage, a journey to proclaim the merciful love of God.

On November 28, 1830, the Blessed Mother appeared again to Catherine Labouré, holding in her hands a small globe (representing humankind). Catherine contemplated her beauty and accepted the mission to make a medal: the persons who wear this medal will receive great graces.

Pilgrimage with Mary on the 190th anniversary of the
apparitions of the blessed mother to saint Catherine Laboure

Today, the world is deeply troubled. Poverty is spreading and has become more accentuated as a result of the pandemic. On November 15th we will celebrate the Fourth World Day of the poor, with the theme, stretch forth your hand to the poor. In his message for that day, Pope Francis wrote: The present experience has challenged many of our assumptions. We feel poorer and less self-sufficient because we have come to sense our limitations and the restriction of our freedom. The loss of employment, and of opportunities to be close to our loved ones and our regular acquaintances, suddenly opened our eyes to horizons that we had long since taken for granted. Our spiritual and material resources were called into question and we found ourselves experiencing fear. In the silence of our homes, we rediscovered the importance of simplicity and of keeping our eyes fixed on the essentials. We came to realize how much we need a new sense of fraternity, for mutual help and esteem

In his message on the occasion of the Missionary Vocations Festival, the Superior General, Father Mavriĉ, recalled the following words of Saint Vincent which the Congregation of the Mission has recently reflected upon: our vocation is to go not to one parish, not just to one diocese, but all over the world (CCD:XII:215). He then went one to say: I hope that these words of Saint Vincent help us to revitalize our foundational vocation as missionaries and to do this from the perspective of our universality and internationality.

Today, one hundred ninety years later, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal continues to watch over humankind and engages in this pilgrimage in order to visit and meet with the ecclesial communities throughout Italy, thus fulfilling the promise of love that is contained in her message: I will always be with you, trust, do not be discouraged.

Our Lady will begin this pilgrimage on Tuesday, December 1 and will continue through November 22, 2021, with the following schedule:

12/01/2020 – 01/01/2021: Lacio, Marche, Umbría

01/02/2021 – 02/03/2021: Campania

02/04/2021 – 02/28/2021: Calabria

03/01-2021 – 03/31/2021: Sicilia

04/01/2021 – 04/30/2021: Apulia, Basilicata and Bbruzzo

05/01/2021 – 05/31/2021: Toscana and Liguria

06/01/2021 – 06/30/2120: Piamonte and Lombardia

09/12/2021 – 10/13/2021; Emilia Romagana and Treveto

10/19/2021 – 11/22/2021: Cerdeña

Through means of this Missionary and Marian initiative, the coordinating group of missionaries, members of the Congregation of the Mission, under the leadership of Father Valerio Di Trapani, are promoting the spread of evangelization material: a pocketbook on Saint Catherine Labouré (Vincentian Liturgical Center), a pocketbook on the Miraculous Medal (Vincentian Liturgical Center), the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Novena Prayers (Vincentian Liturgical Center), the liturgy for receiving the image of Our Lady, pamphlets about the Vincentian Family in Italy, banners about the event, and articles on the Miraculous Medal.

The various branches of the Vincentian Family, parishes and other ecclesial institutions are invited to participate in this Marian pilgrimage that will last for three days (fulfilling all health requirements that have been established as a result of COVID-19). Events will include: celebration on receiving the image, eucharistic celebration, celebration of Mercy, Marian-Vincentian catechesis, meeting with children, youth and adults, prayer for vocations, Marian cenacles in the homes of the poor and the infirm (nursing homes and drop-in centers), financial initiatives to support the Vincentian missionary works.
